We all know how books became important in our life. The leaflets of every book are rich in so many different thoughts, ideas or information. So it is really a precious thing to us. A book can be broadly defined as a written document of at least 49 pages. To a great extent, the evolution of the book has followed the expansion of communication forms and methods and the ever-increasing demand for information.

History of Text Book Printing

The first known forms of written documentation were the clay tablet of Mesopotamia and the papyrus roll of Egypt. Modern book production came about as a result of the invention of the printing press. Although the invention of printing most likely occurred earlier in China as well, the introduction of movable type and the printing press to Europe is credited to Johann Gutenberg of Germany.  Because the printing press and moveable type mechanized the printing process of books, the books became available in great numbers. Printers developed larger presses to accommodate larger sheets of paper and/or the newly invented continuous rolls of paper. These improvements allowed printers to produce books at a much faster rate.  During the decades of the mid-1800s, further progress has made to the book printing technology. They are as follows:

  • The papermaking machine (invented in the 1820s)
  • Binding machinery (invented in 1860)
  • The cylinder press (invented in the 1840s)
  • The Linotype (invented in 1884)

Book production has flourished and expanded during the twentieth century. An important advancement in the book printing technology like offset printing press and computerized typesetting, have made mass production more economical. While the invention of other forms of media, such as the radio and television, has had an adverse impact on reading in general, books remain the primary source of knowledge throughout most of the world.

Designing is very important in the case of book printing. Some of the designing tips to consider are:

  • page size and style
  • typeface size and style
  • the type and weight of paper for the text and cover
  • use of colour
  • presentation of visuals/illustrations in the text, if needed
  • Cover art/illustrations

Text Book Printing Technologies

Now books are printed using the modern printing technologies like Offset Printing and Digital Printing. Both of them have their own features and purposes.

Offset Printing

Modern offset printing is done on a press composed of three rotating cylinders: a plate cylinder, to which the metal plate is fastened; a blanket cylinder covered by a sheet of rubber; and an impression cylinder that presses the paper into contact with the blanket cylinder. These cylinders or rollers are filled with ink and pressed on paper after they’re pressed on rubber plates. A series of inking rollers then pass over the plate, and the ink is rejected by the water-holding areas and accepted by the greasy image. After that, the paper with the printed texts and images will come out of the machine and they are passed to trimming, folding and binding.

  • It is cost effective when large quantities of books have to be printed.
  • It is time-consuming and requires very less manpower
  • The quality of reproduction of images is unparallel

Digital Printing

It is similar to the inkjet printers find in offices and homes. It involves less number of steps than offset printing. So digital printing has become more popular today. Digital printing doesn’t use plates the way offset does but instead uses options such as toner (like in laser printers) or larger printers that do use liquid ink. While offset printing is a fantastic way to produce great-looking print projects, many businesses or individuals do not need large runs of 500 or more, and the best solution is digital printing. This delivers high print quality and is highly cost effective.

  • It is best suited for short-runs.
  • Increased turnaround time and less expense on maintenance and setup
  • Black and white printing are less expensive.
